Rope Bowl & Mat Adventure with Gig

Materials List (What I have found to be useful to make this EASY)

  • At least 50 feet of cotton or cotton/polyester clothesline, approximately 3/16 inch to 1/4 inch wide, ideally without a plastic core. The smaller the rope, the more rope (AND fabric, AND thread) it takes to make a piece.

  • Approximately 1/2 yard total of quilting cotton fabric, cut into 1½ to 1¾ inch strips; scraps, jelly roll strips, or coordinating prints work well – get creative! I prefer the larger cut, but I’m using the TLAR method of measurement “that looks about right”…so accuracy on the size is optional.

  • Thread to match or contrast with fabric (matching thread is a little more forgiving)

  • At least two pre-wound bobbins

  • Size 14 or 16 universal needle, jeans needle or topstitch needle – using a heavy duty “jeans” needle is highly recommended! Needles need to go through LAYERS!

  • To cut: Fabric scissors AND thread snipper

  • Pins (straight pins and ONE large safety pin)

  • To cut your own strips: Large Cutting Mat, long straight edge & Rotary Cutter work best, but you can hand cut (or pre-cut at home) if you feel so inclined.

  • Optional: stiletto, chopstick, or stylus to help guide the bowl as it forms

  • Optional: extra fabric strips, ribbon, yarn, or decorative thread for accents

Before Class Prep

  1. Cut your own fabric into strips about 1½ to 1¾ inch strips. Or…you can use mine! I want to leave the class with ZERO scrap strips left…PLAN on taking some home to practice PLEASE!!

  2. Wind at least two bobbins with the thread you plan to use.

  3. Test your sewing machine with a zigzag stitch before class.

  4. Install a fresh needle suitable for heavier stitching. (Don’t forget to throw in an extra needle…just in case)
